Golden Girl Gabby Douglas Bashed For Hair

gabby-douglas-olympics

We’ve been watching Team USA lead in medals, 37 so far in the Olympics. None of these athletes have been more fascinating that 16-year-old Gabby Douglas. She is the first African-American to ever win the gold medal in all-around  match, and only the second to make Team USA in women’s gymnastics. When asked about her experience after winning she said:

“It was everything I thought it would be. I give all glory to God. I throw it up to God, and the blessings fall back on me. All the hard work and training and hard days were worth it. I”m thankful for the hard days because pushing through those days is what makes a champion”

She is a wonderful athlete, poised, well-spoken, grounded. She represents us well. But every champ will have haters.

Some people are putting her down because of her hair style. For real people, her hair? Lord only knows how many hours of practice and training she has to do while in London. You think she’s worried about her hair?  I guess I shouldn’t be surprised it’s mostly black people who have a lot to say about it. It is nothing but self-loathing that makes those people bash an olympic champion. It is the same self-loathing that make them put down dark-skinned people and women who wear natural hair.

There are some women whose life is a mess, kids dirty and hardly any food in their houses. Yet their hair is always on point. Their nails are always done. I just think it’s a shame that while Gabby was busy making history, these women was busy making hate. But enough about these haters. Let’s see Gabby fly. They don’t call her the flying squirrel for nothing! She defies all gravity, and what an inspiration she is for young girls. Her mother who sacrificed so much must just be bursting at the seams with pride.

Very well said. Black women, always got to be critical and focus on the negative. It is ignorant and just plain foolish. This young girl is going for the gold and they worrying her hair in London. They should worry about themselves, their kids not Gabby Douglas. Unfortunately I don't think this will ever change.

I think it's really sad and shows we have no support or faith amongst each other as a race.  This is a young adult who we're supposed to be guiding and molding through our actions.  Yet, she is finding out early that the "bullying" comes in all forms.  I see nothing wrong with her hair.  Even if it was, honestly, I wasn't paying attention.  I was mesmerized by her talent, as should be.  She's not in a hair competition, she's a trained athlete whose talent has proven she's worthy of credible success.  As others have stated, when you're on the path of greatness the sincerity of genuine people is few and far between.  I'm glad she's found strength in her faith, strength in the love and support of her family, and I hope that the majority (the sane majority) of us as her sisters and brothers can offer her strength in moving forward in her career.  GO GABBY!!!!  #teamUSA
