Earlier today I tried to send a message to someone who is not a "friend" of mine on facebook... only to find out I had to pay! (actual screen shot above). Yes, facebook is now charging a $1 per message! For one dollar, you can send a message to someone who is a non- contact and it will land in their inbox instead of their 'Other' folder. You can send one message a week. If you send more than one message to a non-friend in one week, these unpaid messages will go into the 'Other folder'.
"Facebook users historically react strongly to big changes, then get used to it and move on." said Ian Lurie, CEO of Portent. "At $1 per recipient, it's unlikely anyone will exploit this system to send spam on a massive scale."
What do you think of Facebook's latest monetization effort? Sound off in the comment section below.

Comment by Tracey Harvey on January 31, 2013 at 2:07pm I understand the need to stop the spamming on Facebook but to charge $1 to send messages is ridiculous. They eventually will encourage Facebook users to go to another site for communication. Not everyone has the means financially to support this sort of communication.
