This past Friday night was a big night for me as it was the first time I have ever attended a fashion show competition event put on by IFT (Indy Fashion Time). Unzip the Runway was the name of the event and it lived up to every bit of the name. The venue was simply jaw dropping gorgeous and the designers in the competition did a wonderful job for the most part!
There are a few things that I did frown upon as an attendee to the event. First let me start by saying we as African Americans have developed a bad rap at not starting our events on time and/or not showing up to events on time. We have to do better.
To event coordinators: If your schedule states that the show will start at 8:45pm then please start the show at 8:45pm and not 9:30pm. Your guest do not expect to be held at your event all night because you cannot start on time. Be mindful of their time because you do not know what other plans they may have following your event.
To aspiring designers: Not only do your designs respresent you but the models you put in your designs represent you as well. Please do not put a model that walks like she has something stuck up her hind part in your design. It can really make a good design look really bad. Presentation is everything! From the design to the accessories to the models!
To the MC: Please practice your que cards AHEAD of time. Being nervous comes with the job which is understandable but learning how to mask it is extremely important. Refrain from reading the que cards too fast causing the models to have to walk at warp speed to keep up.
All in all it was a great event with it being in its 5th year of production. Great job IFT! I look foward to attending more and more!
