Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?
I was really shocked when I saw this because we all know that they make these celebrities look picture perfect every time on these magazine covers, then when you see them out and about you can hardly recognize them. Although I'm not sure if this is going to last, I think it's a really great idea especially since celebrities play a really huge role in society, especially for women as it relates to the "perfect" body image. There are so many women out here trying to live up to celebrity women not realizing they have a glam squad making them look flawlessly beautiful daily, but then again is there a such thing as flawless because we're all flawed in one way or another.
A young reader, Julia Bluhm, started a petition that collected over 85,000 signatures asking that Seventeen Magazine at least commit to printing at least one unaltered photo spread a month. After seeing such an overwhelming response, the editor-in-chief, Ann Shoket, vowed to never feature a photo spread in the magazine where the images have been altered or photo shopped. She also said the magazine will embrace women of all skin tones, shapes and sizes, including height and hair texture.
Seventeen magazine could be starting something new that will actually make women start to love and appreciate themselves for who the are. Not only will this make the young reader happy, but millions of women around the world who might be suffering from self-esteem issues and those who compare themselves the seemingly "perfect" celebrity body image.
I think this was not only a huge step, but a very brave one as well. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more real life, every day women featured on the covers of Seventeen Magazine and hopefully this will start a movement and other magazines will follow suit as well.
Do you think this was a good move for Seventeen Magazine?
