"Will the Real Black People of Atlanta Please Stand Up?" Essay Has Gone Viral

via MajicAtl.com

Kelly Smith Beaty, a metro Atlanta native and former contestant on NBC’s The Apprentice, has written an essay that’s gone viral blasting how reality shows portray African-Americans in Atlanta.

The essay, Will the Real Black People of Atlanta Please Stand Up?,” is on the Huffington Post and has been “liked” more than 4,000 times on Facebook.

Here’s an excerpt:

“How is it that a city which was once the crowning jewel in the story of black America has allowed itself to be positioned as the melting pot of black affliction? The Atlanta that I knew and grew up in was one of great pride and self-respect. Our achievements were known across the globe, as people from far and wide would often respond, ‘Wow, I hear that black people are really doing their thing down there,’ when I would tell them I’m from Atlanta. Today that assertion is often met with, ‘Yoooo….I hear Atlanta’s got them bangin’ strip clubs.’…Really?!?”

Although Beaty didn’t mention any reality shows by name, her essay is clearly targeting The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta.

Beaty was on The Apprentice in 2010 but didn’t win.  She attended Spelman College and grew up in Fayetteville. Beaty reportedly wrote the essay after being fed up with how reality television portrays her hometown.

@LaTasha: Yes we all need balance. It really amazes me of all the things they air on the show but believe it or not it's real life for some.. Just when you think you have it bad or damn I accept too much from this man, you see chicks like MiMi on Love & Hip Hop Atlanta and be like DAMN maybe it ain't that bad.. But I watch them from time to time when I'm working on my blogs and stuff just to pass time but for the most part I'm not much of a TV person because I'm too busy trying to make sure my pockets get on millionaire status lol!

Overall we just need a balance.  We have too much ratchetness on television.  Sometimes, for me at least, it's ok to see Love and Hip Hop type shows, but not all the time.

I read this article and it was great.  I think what we need is diversity.  We can all agree that we do not have enough shows that show us in a good light.  Although I am guilty for watching Love and Hip Hop I am hungry to see positive shows that depict us as the people we are...great. I lived in Atlanta for 5 years so I know first hand the greatness of that city.  I wish my fellow Clevelanders had the mentality Atlantans do.  I hope one day we can too have a city where people want to come because "blacks are doing so well."(taken from the article)
