Fearless Fund Faces Racial Discrimination Lawsuit
Aug 14, 2023The Fearless Fund recently faced a lawsuit, which is seen as another attack on Black, Brown, and all people of color in the United States. Sadly, this lawsuit is yet another example of using Black women as a means to undermine the progress we've made in terms of race and gender equality. It is crucial for the courts to acknowledge this lawsuit as what it truly is: a well-funded, coordinated attack on our fundamental freedom for economic mobility and equity.
“In 2019, we launched the Fearless Fund - an organization built by women of color for women of color - to bridge the gap in venture capital funding. Black and Latina women are among the nation’s fastest-growing entrepreneurs, yet receive just .46% of venture capital funding. Fearless Fund has ensured those budding entrepreneurs can access capital and opportunities. Fearless Fund is not exclusionary, but rather a targeted response to the fact we must work twice as hard to earn half as much.
The American Alliance for Equal Rights, which is founded by Edward Blum, erroneously claims in its complaint that Fearless Fund’s initiatives, aimed at addressing systemic racial biases, violate Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. This move threatens to impede the vital work of Fearless Fund and similar institutions and organizations whose primary mission is to provide underrepresented communities with an economic engine to build, sustain and scale their businesses.
In spite of this unprovoked assault on our economic freedom, we remain committed to creating a world where women of color have equal access to the resources and support they need to thrive in business. Women are the backbone of our society, so when they succeed, everyone succeeds.
That’s why we’re calling on our allies and supporters in this critical moment to take a stand. Stand with those women, stand with the Fearless Fund, because an attack on them is an attack on the entire American Dream.
